Here are some thoughts and facts I gathered along the way.
Lease Expiration
The Earth will not be inhabitable for infinite period of time. Eventually, the Sun will die and the Earth will die along with it. It is as simple as that. Now, you may think it will take very long time before this happens. That is relative, as Albert (the guy on the left) often liked to point out. I am sure that the readers of this blog will not live long enough to see this happen and it would be very naive of me to think that this blog would be still popular when this unfortunate event happens.Nevertheless, I hope that the Human Race would survive long enough to see it happen. So, the question is what are we doing today, so that we prepare for the Lease Expiration Date? Why should we care about it, if we know it ain't gonna happen for very, very long time?
Well, it takes very long time to acquire knowledge and technology that would allow us to get to another place, far enough to survive the Lease Expiration.
It is not just that we would have to go somewhere else. Far away from the Solar System. We would also have to find out where to go, well in advance. Not to mention solving a few problems of making changes to the destination Planet we selected for "colonization". The planets like Earth, may exist in many places in our and other Galaxies, but those that are "close enough" may not be exactly what we had in mind in terms of climate, etc.
We could assume that about 1 billion years from now, it would be time for Human Race to move on. The Sun would most likely still be OK, but there may be other changes in the Solar system that could considerably affect our chances of survival after that point.
Interstellar Travel and Technological Advances
It appears that 1 billion years from now we should have achieved the level of technology that would allow us to migrate to some relatively distant planet so we can continue to exist. The long term goal is to develop technology that can transport us far away in a reasonable time.
I am afraid that there are certain limiting factors that may keep us from achieving this goal.
- We do not live long enough on average so that our most creative scientists could contribute more to the advancement of necessary technology.
- Before we can go to our destination planet we need to explore the vast areas of the Universe in search for suitable places to live. Some of that exploration may have to be done by actually going there.
- We do not have enough focus on achieving these goals. We tend to believe that we have a plenty of time.
- How do we achieve enough advances in medicine so that the Human Life may be considerably extended to say 200+ years?
- How do we achieve enough advances in robotics and automation so that the standard of living is improved to the point where the Earth population would focus more on what is really important for our ultimate survival?
Why is all of this so important? Well, a real good scientist like Newton, Maxwell, or Tesla and Einstein is very hard to come by. It would be highly beneficial if we could live longer so that our scientists could also live longer and contribute more. In many cases the scientists would make significant contributions for only 20-30 years and may not be able to live long enough to see further advances in their field of research to further improve upon their previous results. They may have only just a few opportunities in their lifetime to correct and improve their theories due to new data becoming available and new research methods being developed.
For that reason I would estimate that for us to accelerate our technological advances necessary to achieve the stated goals we would need for our best scientists to live 200+ years. We can benefit more from a few real good scientists than from 1000's of Ph.D.'s who got their degrees by hanging at the University long enough and accepting without questioning whatever their professors would dump on them.
We need to keep in mind that for us to achieve the goals outlined here we actually need a considerable number of scientific breakthroughs, not just a large collection of better than average incremental results.
Living longer may also help us when it comes to traveling far away from the Solar system. At least in my case, I would really like to live a few hundred years longer so I can try doing so many things I did not have a chance to do yet and may never had time to get to...
Advances in Robotics and Automation may bring interesting results
One of the ways to keep our focus on important things would be to create the environment where people could really express themselves without putting others in danger. For example, we need to create the environment where the Wars, crime and similar problems are not likely to happen. How do we get there? We need to create the environment where people can be happy and creative, instead of depressed and destructive. When you think long enough about this problem, you may arrive at the same conclusion that I arrived at. We need more powerful robots and automation so that the jobs that most people hate doing can be done by intelligent robots. That, along with improved automation may result in more goods and products becoming available to larger number of people on Earth, including the areas where currently people die on a daily basis because of bad nutrition and deplorable living conditions.
Once we get to the point where we can make energy, food and various products so cheaply (without compromising on quality) we will be on a road to eliminate distractions that are currently preventing us from keeping focus on what is really important.
If an average inhabitant of Earth would be able to afford energy, food and a variety of useful products without having to rely on some third party (e.g. government, mafia boss, local tribe leader) we would remove the ways those "third parties" can manipulate people into killing each other or into living virtual lives and indulging into consuming services and products that would benefit only the "third party" and would not benefit the individual in question. They can do that today since they, the "third party", would decide for us how much of what we need we can get. They would not like for us at all to get too many things that would not make us depend on them. They are trying to increase our dependence on them and they are not in the business of making us free to chose what we want to do with our lives and how to live them. For that reason their only purpose is to create circumstances where they would rule forever over the rest of the World. They think they can achieve that by creating a Nation of addicts that crave for more help.
I think that the change will be brought about through advances in robotics and automation which will increase the quality of our lives. This may sound strange at first. I hope that the change would occur gradually so that the "third parties" would not notice it until it is too late (for them). At that point, many politicians and similar "leaders" would find themselves as being obsolete and not necessary. They will become irrelevant and the way how human societies function would change drastically. I hope the trend would be reversed back toward more localized organization on multiple levels and something that would resemble more closely the documents like the original version of the American Constitution (prior to the changes that were introduced to limit individual rights and expand on the rights of government and ruling Oligarchy).
In short, it seems that we cannot keep focus on what is important because our living conditions are not good enough and we are pushed by various political, activist, and criminal organizations into mental and often physical submission to their goals and values. They are taking away most of what we create using various excuses or just pure force. We do not have any other way of achieving happiness and are growing into a population that is hypnotized and brain washed. A good number of us may get enough to keep going, but the majority of all of us is essentially not satisfied with our lives. A good portion of us is not even aware of the situation we are in since we were made to think that the way we live our lives is actually great, without realizing that the whole thing was not really our idea, but somebody else's. We were just not offered any real choices and we did not attempt to create any more choices on our own that we may like better. The advances in robotics and automation will gradually change the balance of this game to our benefit.
Common Goals to achieve
Finally, what should be our common Goals to achieve?
- Medical advances: to extend life span to 200+ years.
- Robotics and automation: to change the physical and social environment so that our focus can shift to what is really important.
- Technological advances: interstellar travel and exploration. This would eventually enable us to go to a safe place once our lease expires.
- Spiritual advances: our purpose and focus will change along with the advances we will be making. We will advance spiritually simply because it will not be possible for others to manipulate us as easy as they can do it today. We will become much stronger as individuals and our progress will increase exponentially.
